THE countdown to the Vodafone Fiji Cup Championship is officially underway, with Basketball Fiji confirming the return of the tournament for a second consecutive year.

Speaking during the launch at the Vodafone Fiji headquarters in Suva yesterday, Basketball Fiji interim operating officer William Peters acknowledged the continued backing from the telecommunications giant, describing the partnership as vital to the growth of the sport.

“This is the second year that we’ll be running the Vodafone Fiji Cup,” Peters said.

“Last year we brought it back because of the support of Vodafone Fiji and we’re happy to have them back on board with us to run it for a second consecutive year.”

The three-day tournament will be held at the FMF Gymnasium from June 4-6.

According to Peters, 16 teams will compete in the tournament, comprising the best eight men’s teams and best eight women’s teams from Central, Raiwaqa, Nadi and Lautoka basketball associations.

Pool matches will be played over the opening two days before the competition shifts into the knockout stages.

“The first two days will be pool games, and the final day will be the playoffs, semifinals and finals where we will crown the Vodafone Fiji Cup men’s and women’s champions,” Peters said.
