Fiji Airways has received immediate approval from the United States Department of Transportation to expand its scheduled and charter operating authority in the US, giving the national carrier greater flexibility for future services.
The authorization allows Fiji Airways broader rights to operate passenger, cargo and mail services to and from the United States while its amended foreign air carrier permit continues through the regulatory approval process.
The authority will remain valid for two years.
While the decision does not introduce any new Fiji Airways routes, it removes a regulatory hurdle that could make future expansion in the US market easier.
US authorities determined that Fiji Airways satisfied the necessary financial and operational requirements and remained substantially owned and effectively controlled by Fijian interests.
No objections were filed during the review, allowing the authorization to take effect immediately.
Despite securing the expanded rights, Fiji Airways has not announced any additional US destinations.
The airline currently connects Fiji with Los Angeles, San Francisco and Honolulu, with Nadi serving as a key hub for travellers from Australia, New Zealand and other Pacific countries heading to the United States.
Its partnership with American Airlines also provides passengers with onward connections to destinations across the US.
The expanded regulatory authority comes as Fiji Airways adjusts parts of its international network in response to changing market conditions and operating costs.
The new authorization gives Fiji Airways greater scope to expand its US operations in the future, but any new services would depend on the airline’s commercial and network decisions.
For now, the carrier appears focused on consolidating its existing network while maintaining the flexibility to pursue further opportunities in the American market.
