The Government should seriously consider replacing the current Police Commissioner (Rusiate Tudravu) with an expatriate commissioner as part of a stronger national response to corruption.
Speaking at the “State of the Fijian Economy Dialogue” yesterday, Unity Fiji party leader Savenaca Narube said corruption remained one of the major problems affecting Fiji and must be confronted through strong and visible leadership from Government.
“We must fight corruption,” he said.
“It diverts resources away from the poor to the rich. Corruption does it. It misuses taxpayers’ funds.”
Mr Narube also linked corruption to Fiji’s drug problem, saying it contributed to one of the biggest issues the country was facing.
He said Government had to take the lead in the fight against corruption and do so in a way that was clear to the public.
“With due respect to the current Police Commissioner, I would say that we can explore appointing an expatriate Police Commissioner.”
