FEO to scrap results app for next election

THE human error that led to discrepancies in the 2022 election results will not happen again, Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa has assured.

Ms Mataiciwa told The Lens@177 the issue stemmed from manually transferring data between systems.

“We discovered that when we transferred the data from the Results Management Information System into the FEO Results app, that was where the error occurred,” she said.

To prevent future errors, the Fijian Elections Office (FEO) is strengthening its processes.

“We are putting in quality assurance mechanisms, and we are strengthening our processes in terms of being transparent about the system that we use.”

Ms Mataiciwa said an external audit of the Results Management Information System was also planned ahead of the 2026 General Election, adding that the controversial FEO Results app, which was linked to human errors in the 2022 General Election would not be used.

“We are not going to use it for the 2026 General Election,” she said.

Instead, the FEO will establish a media centre to ensure accurate dissemination of results.

“We will work closely with our stakeholders, particularly the media, to ensure that we disseminate accurately the unofficial and official results.”

Ms Mataiciwa explained that this decision was aimed at preventing errors caused by manually transferring data.

“One mechanism is to remove the app, and then we go back to basics, and that is the media centre.”
