The Fijian Elections Office has removed a press release from its website that prematurely announced the issuance of the Writ of Election for the 2026 General Election.
An FEO spokesperson said the press release was prepared as part of a mock exercise and should not have been uploaded to the website.
The release, which had been online for about 12 hours as at 8am this morning, stated that the Electoral Commission and FEO had confirmed the formal commencement of the 2026 General Election following the issuance of the Writ of Election by President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu at State House.
It further stated that the election would be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, with polling stations open from 7.30am to 6pm.
The mock release also stated that Fiji had a provisional 707,982 registered voters as of August 9, comprising 355,500 female voters and 352,482 male voters.
The FEO has clarified that the release was part of an exercise and was not an official announcement of the issuance of the Writ of Election or the election date.
