Team Fiji’s preparations for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games took another important step forward on Saturday, July 4, as athletes, coaches and managers gathered at the Tanoa Plaza in Suva for the Team Fiji Assembly.
The half-day programme was designed to ensure every member of the delegation is equipped with the knowledge, support and understanding needed to proudly represent Fiji both on and off the field of play.
Bringing the team together also provided an opportunity to strengthen relationships, align expectations and reinforce the shared commitment required to perform at the highest level.
The programme featured a series of presentations covering key aspects of the Commonwealth Games. Sessions focused on Team Fiji values and expectations, media and marketing responsibilities, travel logistics, safeguarding, anti-doping, nutrition, hydration, and mental health and wellbeing.
The discussions highlighted that success at the Commonwealth Games extends beyond athlete performance. Athletes and officials were reminded of the importance of professionalism, preparation and personal responsibility, while also learning about the support systems available to help them perform at their best throughout the Games.
Following the general sessions, athletes and team officials separated into role-specific discussions to address the unique responsibilities of each group.
Athletes were reminded what it means to wear the Fiji colours with pride and the standards expected of them as ambassadors for the nation. Discussions focused on personal accountability, teamwork and maintaining the highest level of integrity while representing Fiji. Athlete sessions were coordinated by members of FASANOC’s Athletes Commission who reinforced the importance of safeguarding, mental health and wellbeing, proper nutrition and hydration, and competing in accordance with anti-doping regulations to uphold the principles of clean sport. They were informed on the possibility of being drug tested and the related processes involved.
Meanwhile, coaches and managers took part in dedicated sessions reinforcing the critical role they play in creating a safe, supportive and high-performing environment for athletes. The discussions emphasised effective communication, athlete welfare, safeguarding responsibilities and the importance of working together to ensure athletes receive the best possible support throughout the duration of the Commonwealth Games.
The Team Fiji Assembly forms an important part of the team’s overall preparation programme, ensuring every athlete and official is informed, connected and working towards a common goal. Beyond sharing information, the assembly strengthened the sense of unity within the delegation and reinforced the values that define Team Fiji.
Team Fiji has commenced travel to the Games with Boxing having departed in the weekend to attend a pre-Games training Camp in Ireland. Fellow team mates leave this week with the rest of the sports departing in waves next week as teams are eligible to enter the official Games villages, four days prior to the start of competition.
As the final preparations continue for Glasgow 2026, Team Fiji remains committed to building more than just a successful team. It is fostering a culture built on excellence, respect, commitment and unity, one that empowers athletes and officials to perform with confidence, support one another and proudly represent Fiji on the international stage.
