The family of the late Sakiasi Radravu is seeking a second post-mortem examination to independently determine the cause of his death.

Radravu’s mother, Cema Cakau, visited the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Suva yesterday to request an independent post-mortem.

She said police informed her that investigations into the case would continue.

Radravu was allegedly assaulted by a group of police and military officers at a home he and his partner was staying in Kinoya on the night of April 23.

The operation was reportedly conducted under the joint police and military taskforce conducting a raid.

According to the family, Radravu had been wrongly accused of involvement in a burglary along Bauvudi Rd in Kinoya belonging to a military officer.

The family also claims that the person responsible for the alleged break-in was later identified after Radravu had been assaulted.

Meanwhile, police have confirmed that an internal investigation will be conducted into the actions of the 12 police officers involved in the assault and the alleged failure to follow established procedures during the burglary investigation.

Police said a directive had been issued to investigate the officers involved in the initial arrest and detention, as well as the lack of supervisory oversight.

The Police Internal Affairs Unit has also been directed to ensure internal oversight mechanisms are strictly followed by middle managers, with disciplinary action to be taken against those found in breach of procedures.

Following their visit to CID headquarters, Radravu’s family also visited the Internal Affairs Unit yesterday.
