A shop keeper in Velovelo Settlement, Lautoka is living in fear with his family after he was allegedly attacked and stabbed by an individual believed to have been under the influence of drugs.

Dharmend Rao, 53, said he was attacked more than a week ago but has yet to see any charges laid against his alleged attacker.

“The police came and took him but less than one day later he was back home,” Mr Rao said.

“I don’t know why he is still around our village when he did this to me. I’m afraid he might do something worse.”

Mr Rao’s son, Vincent Rao, said the incident happened around 10.30pm on May 9.

“He came to the shop and wanted to buy cigarette, but we told him that we did not have more left,” he said.

“So he started shouting and verbally abusing my mother. Then my father came out and told him to leave but he kept telling us he wanted us to help him get some money from another person. Mr Vincent said the confrontation led to a physical altercation between the suspect and his father.

Police confirmed a report was lodged by the Rao family.

“The suspect was arrested and interviewed under caution then released awaiting a medical report which is yet to be filled by the doctor concerned,” a police statement said.
