FIJI is preparing to significantly expand its ability to monitor and protect its maritime borders under the proposed Veitacini Treaty with Australia, including the acquisition of drones and uncrewed vessels, and the establishment of new operating bases.
Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs Pio Tikoduadua said maritime security was a critical component of the proposed 10-year defence partnership, given the common security threats facing Fiji and Australia across the Pacific.
Mr Tikoduadua told the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence on Thursday that Fiji and Australia shared common security threats across the blue Pacific.
“Therefore, enhancing maritime cooperation is of critical strategic importance if we are to find shared solutions to common challenges,” Mr Tikoduadua said.
He said the treaty would strengthen the operational capacity of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Fiji Navy and the Maritime Essential Services Centre in Lami.
He said this would be achieved through the purchase of uncrewed sea vessels, unmanned aerial vehicles, air surveillance systems and enhanced information sharing.
“The midterm goal is to make the MESC a regional facility.
“In addition, the ministry will, over the next 10 years, establish operating bases in the north, Rotuma, Lau and in the west, to extend the reach of our maritime assets where they are most needed.
Mr Tikoduadua said Fiji was also working with Australia and other development partners to finalise a maritime security strategy to guide the country’s response to threats along its maritime borders.
“This will be supported by a Maritime Powers Act and a Search and Rescue Bill.”
He said Australia had already built the MESC in Lami and donated three Guardian-class patrol boats to Fiji.
Mr Tikoduadua said a maintenance agreement under the Veitacini Treaty would see Australia maintain the centre and service the patrol boats, saving Fiji thousands of dollars.
