Many parents are unaware that their children are being exposed to pornography between the ages of eight and 11, says Fiji Free from Porn founder Letitia Shelton.
She said parents were unaware because children had their own phones and they were unsupervised.
“Fiji has a long history of watching pornography, unfortunately it has one of the highest views of watching porn in the world,” she said.
“It’s very violent, 88 per cent of pornography is violence against women so what our children have seen is high-level acts of violence and then they acting it out on each other and our teenagers during sex and we’re seeing just a lot of problems this way.”
Ms Shelton said there was a need for more conversation and awareness.
“We can’t afford to be silent around this issue.
“We’ve got to equip ourselves and teach our kids that when they see this, they can come and speak to mum and dad that they can get help.
“Kids are curious and when we’re silent, then they want to go and look more and more into porn and then they become addicted.
“We need to start having a lot more conversations, a lot more education, there are some great speakers here in Fiji that are already in this space and speaking out and educating, so it’s getting a hold of those.”
