Even handsome new buildings can be spoiled by litter

Many fine buildings are going up in Fiji these days, notably at Suva

However good the buildings are, they are often spoiled by smaller objects in their landscape that receive no thought or attention.

Beauty costs effort or money to create and preserve, and on that sharp thorn is killed many a scheme to beautify our towns, but there are ways in which many of us can help to create a beautiful city.

Articles such as this will examine various aspects of the problem from time to time.

This article was published on Saturday September 6, 1958 in this newspaper.

“Subtopia” is a word coined by an English architect-writer to describe the clutter of urban impedimenta spoiling the English countryside and the town alike.

Do you know about Subtopia in Suva?

Rubbish Question

Let’s start with one item – rubbish.

We have a municipal garbage collection service and a city council health service who do all they can to clean up the town, but they need our co-operation.

The rubbish lying about disfigures our town and country.

It is the result of sheer irresponsibility.

Look at the derelict motorcar on the left-hand side of the King’s Road past the Samabula Destitutes’ Home corner. It has been there for months, possibly years – a useless eyesore.

Someone was responsible for this. Should he not be persuaded to remove the object?

The number of discarded oil drums lying about is not so great lately. Perhaps they have been collected for scrap. But they still expose their rusty bellies in partnership with threadbare lorry tyres and other pieces of junk at odd spots on the roadside.

How can we make those responsible for this sort of things see the error of their ways.

At least those of us who should know better and cannot plead ignorance could set an example.
