Envoy raises concern

THE recent horrific killing of eight journalists and two policemen at the Charlie Hebdo magazine office in Paris on Wednesday clearly stated that media freedom is not evident despite much awareness on it, says Michel Djokovic.

The French ambassador, in an interview yesterday, said the killing was a clear indication of people not understanding the hard work by journalists and the media around the world.

“I am deeply shocked by the recent attack which occurred in Paris on January 7 in the headquarters of Charlie Hebdo, the weekly magazine which is a very historical and famous magazine in France,” Mr Djokovic said.

“The gunmen who fired on the journalists and injured a lot of other people are very shocking and we can even feel the pain of it even here from Suva because when we are considering the value of freedom of expression and freedom of the press, its sad to see such a horrific attack.

“I think we can understand the shock this attack has created in France where immediately thousands of people gathered in different cities in support of the killed journalists and have seen a lot of people throughout the world expressing their concerns and standing in solidarity.”

Mr Djokovic said police and authorities attempts to protect journalists were not enough because there were certain people who had targeted them.
