The restoration of 18 per cent Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) contribution by employers and employees was a testament to the Coalition Government’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of Fijian workers.

This was highlighted by Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Viliame Gavoka during the Fiji Trades Union Congress (FTUC) 50th Biennial Delegates Conference held in Nadi on Saturday.

“We believe that the dignity of labour is not just a constitutional right, but a fundamental human right,” he said.

Mr Gavoka said the Government’s actions were guided by the principle that every Fijian deserved to work in an environment that was safe, which respected their dignity and provided fair compensation.

“We are working tirelessly to create more job opportunities, ensure decent work for all and promote constructive industrial relations.

“The Employment Relations (Amendment) Bill 2023 is a crucial step towards reforming our labour laws and strengthening workers’ rights.”

He said trade unions played a very important role in advocating for workers’ rights and welfare.

“Trade unions are instrumental in negotiating better working conditions, fair wages and job security for workers.

“We must move forward with unity in order to build a Fiji that honours the contributions of its workers, respects human rights and leads with compassion and integrity.”
