Energy experts inspect FEA work

THE Fiji Electricity Authority’s power restoration efforts in the Western Division have been commended by a group of energy experts from India.

The group from the National Hydroelectric Corporation (NHPC) — an enterprise of the Indian Government — arrived into the country on Monday to inspect the works carried out by FEA and its contractors in cyclone hit areas.

“I think they are doing a pretty good job and the way they are managing and restoring the system is quite commendable,” said NHPC design general manager Rajesh Sharma.

“As far as the recovery work is concerned we can see that they are doing quite well.

“We visited areas in Ba and we saw that they are doing a very good job.”

He said the group was also interested in the authority’s future plans.

“FEA has a very ambitious plan in the area of generators and renewable energy but the transmission network is not adequate so we will have further discussions on how we could possibly help them in that area.

“We have in India a very strong grid with a lot of interconnections and Fiji has yet to reach that but with time we feel that Fiji can grow to that level.

“Fiji as a whole has very confident people who are doing a good job in getting back to their feet.

In terms of restoration planning it is quite good and very commendable.”
