FIJIANS are being urged to prepare now for the possibility of El Niño conditions and prolonged dry weather in the coming months, with Government agencies stepping up contingency planning.

Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau said agencies were working closely with the Fiji National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) to strengthen preparedness and ensure the country was ready to respond if conditions deteriorated.

“We have been warned about El Niño and possible dry weather moving forward,” he said in a statement.

“We have to prepare for any eventuality.”

He said early action and close coordination among Government agencies and other stakeholders would be critical in managing the potential impacts of prolonged dry conditions.

Particular attention would be required for water resources, essential services and communities that could be vulnerable to worsening conditions.

Mr Tuisawau also warned that Fiji continued to face broader climate-related threats, including rising sea levels, coastal erosion and increasingly intense weather events. He said these risks reinforced the need for communities to remain prepared and resilient.
