Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) received the balance of a $15.6 million insurance settlement in 2025 following extensive damage to its Butoni Wind Farm caused by Tropical Cyclone Harold.
According to EFL’s 2025 Annual Report, recently tabled in Parliament, the company completed major restoration work on the wind farm after accepting the insurer’s final settlement offer.
The Butoni Wind Farm, commissioned in 2007, sustained significant damage when Tropical Cyclone Harold struck Fiji on 7 April 2020.
Following a comprehensive damage assessment conducted by Vergnet, EFL lodged an insurance claim under its Material Damage/Business Interruption (MD/BI) insurance policy in 2024.
The report states that EFL’s Board approved the insurer’s final settlement offer of $15.6 million, net of deductibles, in December 2024. Formal acceptance of the offer was completed in February 2025, in accordance with the insurer’s requirements.
EFL had already received $4.5 million in 2024, with the remaining $11.1 million paid during the 2025 financial year.
The company said the funding enabled repair works to restore the wind farm to its original operating condition and resulted in the reversal of a previously recognised impairment loss of $3.08 million.
According to the report, 20 wind turbines have now been repaired and recommissioned.
However, work remains ongoing on the remaining 15 wind turbines, which had not yet been recommissioned when the 2025 financial statements were authorised.
EFL said the restoration of the Butoni Wind Farm forms part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen Fiji’s renewable energy infrastructure and improve the resilience of the national electricity network.
