Earthquake occurs in Lau Basin

Update: 10:44AM A MODERATE size earthquake with deep depth source location occurred in the Lau Basin last night.

The 5.4 magnitude earthquake occurred at a depth of 542 kilometres at 10:01pm.

It occurred 167km northeast from Ono-i-Lau, 227km west of Ha’apai in Tonga and 505km southeast from Suva.

The Mineral Resources Department’s Seismology Unit said it did not pose any threat to the Fiji region.

Meanwhile, a 5.3 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Tonga region at a depth of 180km at 8:01pm yesterday and it also did not pose any threat to Fiji.
