THE Swire Shipping Fijian Drua are backing continuity and firepower as they prepare for a crucial Round 12 clash against the Highlanders in the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific competition at Govind Park in Ba tomorrow.
Head coach Glen Jackson has largely retained a settled line-up, signalling confidence in combinations that have steadily built momentum in recent weeks.
Jackson said the forward pack had laid a solid platform, particularly in the line-out, while acknowledging the challenge that awaits against a physical Highlanders side.
“We look like a pretty settled squad.
“Our tight five line-out has been awesome, and while the scrum has been under a bit of pressure at times, the boys have been working well. We know the Highlanders have a strong forward pack, so that battle will be important.”
The Drua welcome back halfback Isaac Leleiwasa, who missed last week because of passport issues, adding depth to an already competitive number nine rotation.
Young winger Joji Nasova has been handed an opportunity to shine in front of his home fans, while co-captain Frank Lomani has been shifted to the wing in a move Jackson believes maximises the team’s strengths.
“I just want our best players on the field.
“It doesn’t matter what number is on your back. Frank epitomises what it means to be a Drua player, so we’ve found a way to include him.”
Off the bench, rising talent Phillip Baselala is set to make an impact, with Jackson praising the youngster’s development and hunger.
“He deserves it. He’s an international-quality player and still very young, so he’s going to play a lot of rugby. It’s tough because we’ve got depth in that position, but that’s a good problem to have.”
At the back, Isikeli Rabitu returns at fullback after recovering from a heavy concussion suffered against the Brumbies. Jackson confirmed all medical protocols were followed, including the mandatory stand-down period.
“He’s come through everything with flying colours.
“Everyone knows how much I rate him, so it’s great to have him back.”
With Govind Park quickly becoming a fortress for the Drua, Jackson is hopeful the Ba crowd will once again provide the spark.
“It’s a special place for us. The support we get here lifts the boys, and we’re expecting another big performance in front of our fans.”
The Drua will be aiming to capitalise on home-ground advantage as they look to strengthen their position on the competition ladder.
