Government seems to have forgotten about the people who voted for them, and this is evident in the way the price of living keeps increasing.
These were the sentiments of Shiu Sharan who has been a carrier driver at the Valelevu grounds for over 20 years.
Mr Sharan is one of many who say they will be affected by the increase in fuel prices which came into effect yesterday, as announced by the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission.
He expressed his frustration with the cost of living in Fiji, particularly affecting those living below the poverty line.
“The cost of fuel is very high and that really affects us, some people can’t afford to pay their fare,” the 63-year-old said.
“Even the people can’t afford to pay $25-$30 for fare so at the end of the day there will be a loss for us.”
He said the Government must act on its promises and put its words into action to increase the minimum wage.
“They must put the pay up a bit because we cannot survive.
“You got the cost of living very high, cost of the sugar, everything is high.
“During the election, they were shouting they were going to put it (pay) up, but when they got their seat, nobody was acting on it — they forgot about us.”
He said members of the public must be consulted first before announcing the increase in the cost of basic items.
