KBL Saru Dragons rugby league team finally etched its name on the coveted FNRL Vodafone Cup trophy after a hard fought 20-18 victory over Makoi Bulldogs at Lautoka’s Churchill Park yesterday.
After years of trying, struggles and sacrifices the Dragons ended their title drought to create a history for the sport and for the club.
Flyer Peniasi Vatu broke the hearts of the Bulldogs players and supporters when he scored the winning try in the extra time to give his team the much needed win.
The game was evenly matched and worthy of a final as players threw their bodies on the line in quest for victory.
Both teams were locked 12-all at fulltime before the Bulldogs broke the deadlock in the first half of extra time to lead 18-12.
Dragons’ tough men Tikiko Noke and Semisi Tora led the onslaught with their breaking runs and smothering hits that rattled their opposition in the second spell of the extra time.
Noke created Saru’s first try in the extra time when he bulldozed his way past three defenders and offloaded in a tackle to his team-mate Seruvi Ralulu to score.
The Dragons failed to convert the try but never lost hope until Vatu completed a wonderful backline move to dive over in the dying seconds of the game.
Head coach Tevita Volavola said hard work and commitment had paid off.
He said the win was special and commended his troops for their bravery.
“This is history for the team after years of trying,” said Volavola.
“The boys never lost hope despite being down 18-16 in the last stages of the game.
“I thank the boys for their effort and I also thank our sponsor, supporters and fans for supporting the boys throughout the season.”
Bulldogs skipper Jone Wesele also saluted the Dragons for their achievement.
He said his boys gave their best but it was not enough to win them the game.
