Calls to disband the joint police and military operations over an incident unrelated to the task force are “funny”, says Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu.
Responding to concerns over alleged assault cases, including the one involving the late Sakiasi Ose Radravu, Mr Tudravu defended the ongoing collaboration between the Fiji Police Force and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.
“It’s so funny for people to call out just because of an incident not related to the taskforce,” he said.
Mr Tudravu said the joint operation had the support of Government and was established in response to the growing national concern over illicit drugs.
“Yet people start calling.
“The call for a joint operation supported by government.
“I personally requested the commander, given that the drugs have been raised to a national issue.
“It’s only proper that the two forces join hands.”
He said the partnership demonstrated the seriousness with which authorities were approaching the fight against drugs.
“So that the members of the public know how serious we are in trying to tackle this issue,” he said.
“And we are doing okay.”
Mr Tudravu also stressed that safeguards were in place to ensure the operation was conducted lawfully.
“We have an SOP in place.
“We have all the arrangements that have been done between the two forces for them to work according to the law.”
