A WELL-EXECUTED defensive game plan and disciplined offensive performance propelled the Blaze junior women’s team to a 25-15 victory over the Kaunikuila Aces in day two of pool games at the Vodafone Fiji Cup Basketball Tournament yesterday.
The match was defined by disciplined defence, controlled ball movement and patient execution in the half-court, as both teams settled into the demands of tournament basketball.
Blaze established control early through a compact defensive system designed to limit penetration and reduce high-percentage opportunities.
Their ability to communicate effectively on defence and maintain composure in possession allowed them to dictate the pace of the contest for long periods.
The side also showed discipline in transition, quickly recovering on defence and preventing the Aces from generating easy baskets on the fast break.
Captain Vasiti Vugakoto said the team’s structure was intentional, especially in a tournament where possession value increases with every round.
“We focused on slowing the game down when needed and making sure every possession had purpose,” she explained.
“On defence, we talked a lot about helping early and recovering fast so they couldn’t get easy drives.”
Vugakoto also highlighted the importance of defensive communication, particularly when managing screens, rotation and help-side coverage, which played a key role in limiting the Ace’s offensive production.
Looking ahead to the clash against the Iconic Redz (yesterday), Vugakoto said the team remained focused on its own performance.
“We just need to stick to our game plan, communicate on defence and play as a team. If we do the little things right, we should put ourselves in a good position,” she said.
Blaze were preparing to face the Iconic Redz in their final pool match yesterday.
The team aimed to finish the pool stage strongly and carry momentum into the do-or-die elimination rounds today.
