Fifteen years of uncertainty over the right of assembly, expression, association and to strike or picket when negotiations with employers fall through, will come to an end when unions, employers and Government ink an agreement by the end of this month or early February.

Employment and Industrial Relations Minister Agni Deo Singh said the tripartite agreement would guarantee workers’ rights and business sustainability.

He said the tripartite deal would be conveyed to the International Labour Organization which was ready to send a contact mission to Fiji to examine workers’ rights and whether they were being tramped upon.

Meanwhile, a meeting Mr Singh held last week with the employers’ representative, the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation, focused on the brain drain and loss of skilled labour which has resulted in Fijian companies importing labourers from countries such as Bangladesh and the Philippines.
