THE Fiji Deaf Rugby 7s team is calling for financial support as it continues preparations for the World Deaf Rugby 7s tournament in Narita, Japan, from October 30 to November 3.
The team is currently camping in Suva, combining its training programme with community service and educational visits ahead of the international tournament.
The players visited the Golden Age Home in Samabula yesterday as part of their community outreach programme.
Today, the team is scheduled to visit St Giles Hospital for a community and educational programme focusing on mental health awareness and the harmful effects of drug use.
The team will conclude its training week with a session at the Sigatoka Sand Dunes tomorrow. Team executive Lionel Danford said preparations had been progressing well, with the side benefiting from a scrimmage session with the Fiji Airways men’s 7s team last week.
“Preparation is great, thanks to the Fiji Air ways men’s 7s for the scrimmage session last week,” Danford said.
However, the team is still seeking financial assistance to meet its expenses for the trip to Japan.
“We are still asking if anyone can donate as we are still short of funds. We are hoping that some one will come through for us, trusting God on it,” he said.
Danford acknowledged the support received from the Fiji National Sports Commission, the Australian Government’s Vuvale Partnership through the PacificAus Sports programme, Fiji Rugby and the Fiji Association of the Deaf.
The team will wrap up its preparations next week before departing for Japan the following week.
The tournament presents an opportunity for Fiji’s deaf rugby players to represent the country on the international stage while showcasing their skills and determination in the fast-paced seven-a-side format.
