Damaging 4-metre swells forecast for Fiji waters

Residents, mariners and coastal communities are being urged to take precautions as damaging heavy swells of up to four metres are expected to affect parts of Fiji from Thursday.

The warning applies to the southwest of Viti Levu, Lau Waters, the Koro Sea and the Kadavu Passage, where rough sea conditions and dangerous coastal impacts are anticipated.

Authorities warn that the swells could generate strong currents and large breaking waves along exposed coastlines, even in areas experiencing otherwise fair weather conditions.

The advisory urges members of the public to avoid unnecessary activities near exposed coastlines, reefs and seawalls, where wave action may become hazardous.

Small craft operators and fishers have been advised to closely monitor marine forecasts and weather updates before venturing out to sea, while swimmers and recreational users are being urged to stay out of affected waters.

Boat owners are also encouraged to secure vessels and take steps to protect coastal property that may be vulnerable to wave damage.

The public is being reminded to follow guidance issued by local authorities and emergency agencies and to stay informed through the latest forecasts, warnings and advisories from the Fiji Meteorological Service.

The heavy swells are expected to develop from Thursday and may create dangerous conditions across affected maritime areas.
