AS gatekeepers of safety and enablers of prosperity, customs administrations must ensure safeguarding national security and driving economic development.
Speaking at the 2025 International Customs Day celebration held at the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service headquarters in Suva yesterday, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka addressed the growing complexity of global threats and the need for proactive measures.
“The ever-evolving nature of threats, ranging from smuggling and illicit trade to terrorism, necessitates a vigilant and proactive approach from customs administrations,” Mr Rabuka said.
He commended customs agencies worldwide for their efforts in fortifying defences through international collaborations, intelligence sharing, and the adoption of advanced technologies.
“The role of customs in national security cannot be overstated,” he said.
“It is through their meticulous inspections and monitoring that our nations are protected from the influx of contraband, counterfeit goods, and other harmful entities.”
Mr Rabuka paid tribute to the dedication of customs officers, describing them as the first line of defence.
“We salute the dedication and bravery of customs officers who stand as the first line of defence, ensuring the safety and well-being of our citizens,” he said.
He also highlighted the integral connection between customs services and economic prosperity, noting that their operations facilitate legitimate trade while securing vital supply chains.
“By facilitating legitimate trade and ensuring the security of supply chains, customs services lay the groundwork for economic development and prosperity,” Mr Rabuka explained.
He said the revenue generated through customs duties and taxes plays a crucial role in supporting national budgets.
“The revenue collected through customs duties and taxes forms a substantial portion of national budgets, funding essential public services and infrastructure projects.”
The event commemorated the dedication and impact of customs services both in Fiji and globally, as they continue to adapt to emerging challenges while fostering economic and social well-being.
