Cricket Fiji will for the first time host a Super 8 tournament.

This is a new tournament introduced this year as the association taps into the unseen talent on the islands.

Of the 11 associations affiliated to Cricket Fiji, eight of them are from the islands, majority from the Lau Group.

The Super 8 includes the top teams that made it to the quarter-finals of the National Easter Championship earlier this month which Kabara won for the first time.

“The top teams for Cricket Fiji’s inaugural Super 8 tournaments are Kabara, Komo, Moce, Namuka, Suva, Nadi, Lakeba and Ono-i-Lau,” association chief executive Sitiveni Rokoro said.

The Super 8 will become only the second major tournament that men’s teams can compete in a season.

“The top eight was selected from the 14 teams that took part during the Easter Championship which is our first major tournament every year. They will come back in August to take part in the first-ever Super 8 tournament that we will run,” Rokoro said.

The motive is to give selected national players more game time for the upcoming East Asia Pacific Qualifiers which will be held in Samoa in August.
