Fiji Cricket conducted an umpire course on Saturday to provide interested individuals with necessary skills and accreditation to become an ICC Level 1 umpire.

Fiji Cricket chief executive officer Sitiveni Rokoro said the idea for having the training was to help develop the sport of cricket in Fiji.

“Our organisation and the game cannot grow by itself without the continuous training and empowerment of officials facilitating the game at local, domestic, and national levels.

“This training, while addressing these issues, also aims to enhance the profile and competitiveness of our domestic competitions,” he said.

The two-day ICC Level 1 course/training was carried out by two Fiji Cricket umpires, Tomasi Nawaciono and Ruci Kaiwai.

“The attendees are representatives from Cricket Fiji’s affiliated associations who are currently in Suva for the Annual National Easter Cup tournament.

“These individuals are already actively officiating within their local association leagues and are eager to enhance their understanding of professional game management.”

This competency-based course aligns with the International Cricket Council’s strategic vision of empowering ICC members to develop their own workforce while also inspiring participants to pursue cricket and realise their full potential.

“We have seven values, and these are the acronyms of the word CRICKET.

“This training addresses one of our values which is knowledgeable, the K of the word cricket which translates to

“We offer our people an environment of continuous learning”.

“We hope this will translate to success at both national and international levels.”

Meanwhile, Rokoro confirmed the Fiji Secondary School Under-19 Women’s Cricket League will not be held this week as the Easter Championship competitions kick start this weekend.
