A FORMER Labasa market wheelbarrow worker, Apenisa Mainaucakoko, is still waiting for justice more than a decade after he was seriously injured in a taxi accident.
Mr Mainaucakoko, of Natuvu in Cakaudrove, said the accident happened at night near the Labasa mill in 2016 while he was walking in search of a taxi.
“I tried waving at the taxi to stop, however, it didn’t,” he said.
“That was when I was hit and sustained my injuries.”
In a video uploaded on Facebook, he said the taxi stopped a short distance ahead, and a police vehicle on patrol arrived at the scene at the same time.
He said he was admitted to the Labasa Hospital for about a month because of the severity of his injuries.
“I suffered injuries to my hand, chest and face and was kept under observation by the doctors and nurses.”
Before the accident, he worked as a wheelbarrow worker at the Labasa market, earning a living by transporting customers’ goods. He said the injuries prevented him from returning to the work that had supported him for many years. He said he hoped his case would finally be heard so he could move on with his life.
Questions sent to police more than two weeks ago for comments on the concerns raised by the man remained unanswered when this edition went to press.
