THE impact of Tropical Cyclone Harold, combined with the economic downturn caused by COVID-19, will make it very difficult for some parents to send their children to school.

This was the word from Foundation for the Education of Needy Children (FENC Fiji) officer in-charge national operations, Priya Preetika Lata, when asked about the proposed start of school date being set at June 15 this year.

This newspaper had asked FENC Fiji whether parents would be able to send children to school in light of the fact that a significant number were on reduced hours, reduced income and some had even lost their jobs because of COVID-19.

“All I can say is that parents will face a lot of difficulties in accommodating children’s meals and school items,” Ms Lata said.

“Some parents are affected very badly by TC Harold and due to COVID-19, they may not be able to send their children back to school since they have lost their school supplies.”

Ms Lata said the issue was not unique to Fiji.

“Poverty remains an international and national problem due to COVID-19.

“Various organisations have taken on the responsibilities and we at FENC Fiji are dedicated to the provision of education for the neediest children in Fiji.

“This is with the firm belief that education is a main tool that will assist to eradicate poverty.”

Education Minister Rosy Akbar said earlier, 123 schools were affected on Viti Levu, Kadavu, Lomaiviti and Southern Lau where an estimated 11,837 students were affected by TC Harold.
