Municipals councils must take their functions and responsibilities seriously and deliver as expected, says Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa.

Mr Nalumisa told the municipal council CEO and special administrators’ forum on Wednesday, that the ministry had received grievances from ratepayers about councils not being consistent with their essential services.

“I wish to remind the councils to be proactive and responsive to issues raised by the ratepayers,” he said.

“We must not wait for the matters to escalate to the ministry and other authorities

. “Let us seize this moment as an opportunity to rededicate ourselves to the cause of progress and development in Fiji. By working together in partnership and solidarity, we can overcome any challenge and realise our collective aspirations for a better tomorrow.”

Mr Nalumisa commended the CEOs and special administrators for their participation at the three-day forum.

“This shows your commitment towards building a local government that focuses on development and innovation for the betterment of the municipalities. I hope this forum will be the mechanism for positive change.”
