The Lautoka City Council yesterday removed nine Royal Palm trees as they were infested with termites.
Speaking to this newspaper yesterday, head of services Shalend Singh said these trees posed risks to members of the public, ratepayers and moving traffic.
“The council, based on the assessment carried out with the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji, found out that a number of trees within Lautoka City were invested with termites,” he said.
“So what we have decided, that gradually over time and in the coming months, we are going to replace these trees with new and healthy young Royal Palm trees to bring about more beauty and safety to the city.
“This is just to safeguard the public.”
Mr Singh said the Lautoka City Council was taking this proactive approach for the safety of citizens and visitors.
