A 20-year-old woman has confessed to using methamphetamine to help her carry out her work running a small hair-braiding business.

The young woman pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful possession of illicit drugs after being found with 0.021 grams of methamphetamine in Vatuwaqa on November 20 last year.

Magistrate Yogesh Prasad, who will sentence her next month, questioned her regarding the circumstances of her drug use.

She told the court that she injected the drug using a syringe whenever she was stressed with work.

Magistrate Prasad told her that no one should rely on drugs to perform any kind of work. He warned of the severe consequences of addiction while highlighting Fiji’s growing drug and HIV crisis.

The woman began using drugs after meeting her older partner, who faces similar drug charges.

It was also revealed in court that she did not complete her Form Seven studies because she wanted to venture into a small business.

Emotional in court, the young woman assured the magistrate she would no longer associate with shady individuals, promised to change her behaviour and stop using drugs.

Mr Prasad is set to deliver his sentence on June 9.
