Constitutional redress

FIJI Zone taxi members have filed a constitutional redress application in the High Court in Lautoka challenging the removal of the open rank taxi system.

About 20 members appeared in court before Justice Mohammed Azhar on Thursday.

Lawyer Roopesh Singh of Patel and Sharma said they had filed their application for constitutional redress Under Section 44 of the Constitution.

He said his clients were challenging the legality of the LTA amendment to the legislation passed this year which removed the open rank system.

Mr Singh said the removal of the open rank system was unfair and breached the rights of taxi drivers.

He said the amendment to the legislation was oppressive to all the taxi permit holders who were granted taxi permits between 2017 and 2023.

The matter has been adjourned to July 14.
