FIJI’S Constitutional Review Commission report will be tabled in Parliament at a special sitting in the next few weeks, with the timing now dependent on the return of the Speaker.
Minister for Information Lynda Tabuya said Cabinet discussed yesterday the pathway for the report to be formally tabled, following the issuance of a warrant by the President authorising it to be brought before Parliament.
“We have wanted to have the Constitution Review Report to be tabled in Parliament in a special sitting as soon as possible,” Ms Tabuya said.
“But this has not been possible as we await the Honourable Speaker to be present in Fiji.”
She said the report had already been presented to the President, who subsequently issued the warrant providing the constitutional pathway for its tabling.
“It has been tabled in Cabinet, but we need to follow the presidential warrant.”
She said the report was now available to the public but must still go through the required parliamentary process.
“It will be a special Parliament sitting in the next couple of weeks. We’re just waiting to hear from the Secretary-General to Parliament on that.”
The Constitutional Review Commission submitted its full report after undertaking consultations on possible reforms to Fiji’s Constitution, with the Government expected to consider its recommendations once it is formally tabled in Parliament.
