DOMINATING collisions and set-piece battles will be crucial for the Fiji Water Flying Fijians if they are to unleash their trademark attacking flair in their opening Rugby Nations Championship fixture against Wales tomorrow morning at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.
Interim head coach Senirusi Seruvakula shared these insights during a media briefing via Zoom from Cardiff on Saturday morning.
Wales enter the match buoyed by an impressive performance against a strong Barbarians side last week.
However, Seruvakula remains confident that his tactical approach will unlock Fiji’s potent attack.
“We expect Wales to come at us strongly, but our focus is on executing our game plan and meeting our objectives,” he said.
“Doing well in our set pieces and winning collisions is key. That’s the message for this week. Accuracy and discipline must underpin everything we do.”
This fixture marks a significant opportunity for Fiji, who have been building momentum in recent seasons, aiming to re-establish themselves as a dominant force in international rugby.
Seruvakula’s bold strategy is reflected in his 23-man squad, featuring a robust and mobile forward pack complemented by a lethal backline poised to exploit any opportunity.
After 11 days of preparation, Seruvakula expressed confidence in the team’s progress.
“There is a lot of clarity, and the players are gelling well. We’re very excited that everyone is together and ready as a team,” he added.
Key matchups to watch include Fiji’s dynamic backline boasting world class finishes in Jiuta Wainiqolo and Salesi Raiyasi.
In the forwards’ battle, where set-piece dominance dictates the flow of the game, Fiji’s young but determined tight five will need to be at their very best against their highly clinical and experienced Welsh opposition ensuring quality ball is delivered to the backline.
Fiji will take on Wales tomorrow at 1.10am at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff Wales.
