The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a Coastal Inundation Alert for several low-lying coastal areas, warning that damaging heavy swells combined with high tides could cause sea flooding from Wednesday.

The alert covers the southern coastal areas of the Mamanuca Group, southern Viti Levu from Momi through Sigatoka, Korolevu, Pacific Harbour to Suva, as well as the southern coasts of Beqa, Vatulele, Kadavu, Lau and the Lomaiviti Group.

According to the Fiji Meteorological Service, a cool east to southeast wind flow, together with a high-pressure system and a low-pressure system southwest of Fiji, is expected to generate heavy swells capable of causing coastal inundation, particularly during periods of high tide.

The highest risk periods are forecast for:

-Wednesday, 8 July, around 12:15pm, with a high tide of 1.65 metres and a moderate chance of sea flooding.

-Thursday, 9 July, around 12:45am, with a high tide of 1.80 metres, and again at 1:20pm, with a high tide of 1.60 metres, both carrying a moderate risk of coastal flooding.

The weather office warns that low-lying coastal communities could experience sea flooding, while hazardous sea conditions are expected to affect fishing, boating and other marine activities.

There is also a risk of debris being washed onto coastal roads and shorelines.

The Fiji Meteorological Service is urging residents living in vulnerable coastal areas and those planning activities at sea to remain vigilant, take the necessary precautions and continue monitoring the latest weather updates and official advisories.
