Coastal flooding risk as rain continues

A coastal inundation alert remains in force for parts of southern Fiji as weather conditions continue to pose a risk of sea flooding.

The Fiji Meteorological Service says affected areas include the Coral Coast–Sigatoka region, the Mamanuca Islands, Kadavu and the southern Lau Group.

A slow-moving trough of low pressure, combined with moderate southwesterly swells generated by a system to the far south of Fiji, is contributing to the current conditions.

“Coastal sea flooding is likely during high tides over southern coastal areas,” the weather office said, adding that conditions are expected to gradually ease later today.

Elsewhere, occasional showers are forecast across much of the country, with thunderstorms and isolated heavy falls possible in the afternoon or evening.

Authorities warn that localised heavy rain could lead to flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

The public is advised to remain cautious, particularly in vulnerable coastal zones during high tide periods.
