CHILDREN were the only participants at a clean-up at Lagilagi Settlement in Raiwaqa last Saturday, collecting rubbish from the neighbourhood, including waste from roadside drains.
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change provided the children with recyclable bags and gloves for the clean-up.
They then moved through the settlement collecting litter and clearing rubbish from the drains.
Minister for Environment and Climate Change Lynda Tabuya said the children had set an example for the wider community by taking responsibility for their surroundings.
“The future of Fiji’s environment begins in our homes and communities,” Ms Tabuya said.
“When our children lead by example, they inspire all of us to take responsibility for protecting the places we live and the oceans that sustain us.”
She raised concern over rubbish being scattered around a large waste bin despite clear signs of “kua ni benu ca” written boldly on the bin.
“Civic pride begins at home. If we cannot keep our own communities clean, we cannot expect others to do it for us.”
Ms Tabuya called on parents to reinforce responsible waste disposal at home and encouraged the children to respectfully remind others to do the right thing when they witnessed littering.
