The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) Fiji National Chess Championship entered its fifth round today, with top contenders Candidate Master (CM) Manoj Kumar and Maharaj Yash Krishen facing off on Board one.

Both players remain undefeated after four rounds, making today’s matchup one of the most anticipated of the tournament.

In the women’s category, WCM Gloria Sukhu and WCM Tanvi Prasad continue to lead with three points each, displaying skill and consistency in a strong field of competitors.

Fiji Chess Federation President Hilda Kunau said the championship has taken on a special atmosphere this weekend as the event coincides with the Fiji Day long weekend.

“Rounds 5 and 6 fall on Fiji Day, and it’s a wonderful way to celebrate — spending time with our families between rounds and playing chess,” Kunau said.

“This tournament not only showcases Fiji’s chess talent but also the sense of community and connection that the game brings.”

The FWCC Fiji National Chess Championship continues tomorrow with Rounds 7 and 8, as players battle for top honors and national ranking points.
