THE Swire Shipping Fijian Drua will look to unleash their biggest weapon through the middle when they host the NSW Waratahs in today’s crucial Super Rugby Pacific clash at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
And if early indications are anything to go by, the midfield battle could heavily swing in favour of the home side.
The Drua have named experienced campaigner Virimi Vakatawa at inside centre alongside the in-form Tuidraki Samusamuvodre at outside centre — a combination carrying power, composure and attacking spark.
Standing opposite them will be Waratahs pair Lawson Creighton and Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, two talented players still searching for consistency as a midfield unit.
Former French international Vakatawa is expected to play a major role for the Drua.
Known for his ability to break tackles and free his arms in contact, the veteran midfielder brings valuable experience and physicality to the 12 channel.
His direct running game is likely to test Creighton defensively, especially with the Waratahs playmaker more accustomed to operating at fly-half.
The Drua will also rely on Vakatawa’s ability to draw defenders before releasing support runners outside him.
At No.13, Samusamuvodre faces one of the competition’s most talked-about young stars in Suaalii.
While Suaalii’s aerial skills and athleticism remain dangerous, Samusamuvodre’s understanding of the Drua’s attacking systems and the fast-paced conditions in Suva could prove decisive.
The Drua centre has quietly developed into one of the side’s most reliable performers this season with his sharp defensive reads and strong support play.
What strengthens the Drua advantage is continuity.
Unlike the Waratahs combination, the Drua midfield has shown better cohesion in both attack and defence, particularly at home where the side traditionally lifts another level in front of its vocal supporters.
The humid Suva conditions and expected physical battle through the middle may further favour the Drua style of play.
If the hosts can dominate the gain line early and win the collision battle, the Waratahs could find themselves under immense pressure for long periods.
And in Suva, momentum is something the Drua rarely surrender easily.
