Growing concern over plastic waste has sparked calls for greater use of natural, biodegradable products made by local women artisans.

Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran Minister said traditional craft made from natural materials could provide an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic items commonly used in daily life.

Ms Kiran said plastic decorations were increasingly becoming an environmental concern.

“You know, there is a lot of concern right now about the plastic things we are putting on graves,” she said.

She said plastic wreaths and decorations often did not break down naturally and could damage the environment.

“It doesn’t biodegrade, and it damages the soil. When it washes into rivers, it also affects marine life.”

She said women artisans already had the skills to create natural alternatives that were both beautiful and environmentally friendly.

“You make beautiful, natural products. These can be used as wreaths and decorations that people need regularly.”

She said such items could create a steady market for women if produced in larger quantities.

“Just like garlands, wreaths can also become a daily market.”

She said the shift towards environmentally friendly products also presented an opportunity for women artisans to expand their businesses while helping protect the environment.
