THE Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) should be subjected to a special audit to uncover waste, improve accountability and expose what Opposition MP Viam Pillay describes as years of mismanagement, Parliament heard yesterday.

Speaking during the 2026-2027 National Budget debate, Mr Pillay accused FSC of failing cane growers despite receiving millions of dollars in taxpayer-backed support.

“The FSC has completely lost its plot and has become a monument of mismanagement on a grand scale,” Mr Pillay said.

He claimed that while Government continued to provide financial guarantees to keep the corporation afloat, growers were bearing the brunt of the industry’s decline.

“Millions of dollars in taxpayer guarantees are handed over to the corporation every single year, yet the actual growers are left out to dry.”

He also questioned the corporation’s management, alleging it had failed to be transparent about its operations.

“The management of FSC has been completely incompetent, hiding the operational reality from the public and the taxpayers who constantly bail them out.”

Mr Pillay said a special audit was needed to identify inefficiencies and ensure those responsible were held accountable.

“We need to bring absolute accountability to this institution. We demand a special audit to reduce administrative waste, cut down on the massive hidden operational costs, and bring corporate executives to task.”

He questioned why senior executives continued to receive “lavish salaries” while many cane farmers struggled to meet basic operating costs.
