The Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji (CAAF) has warned members of the public against using fireworks near airports during Diwali celebrations, saying the practice poses serious risks to aircraft and passengers.

In a public notice, CAAF said it receives increased reports of fireworks being discharged near airports during the festive season.

The authority reminded the public that aiming, firing or directing fireworks at or towards an aircraft or airport is a criminal offence under Fiji’s Air Navigation Regulations 1981.

Offenders may face prosecution.

CAAF said fireworks must not be used within five kilometres of Nadi and Nausori International Airports or within three kilometres of any other domestic airport.

However, limited exemptions will apply on Sunday, November 8, and Monday, November 9, 2026, between 5pm and midnight.

During these periods, fireworks may be used within the restricted zones provided they do not exceed 61 metres, or 200 feet, above ground level.

Fireworks displays must also be located outside runway approach and take-off paths, maintaining a minimum distance of 500 metres on either side.

CAAF said members of the public could apply for permission under Regulation 78(2), although approval would be subject to conditions.

It stressed that CAAF approval does not replace permits required from other authorities.

The authority has urged members of the public to immediately report unsafe or illegal fireworks activity to the nearest police station or police post, providing details of the location, time and incident.

CAAF said the restrictions were necessary to protect aircraft operations and ensure the safety of passengers and crew during the Diwali celebrations.
