A major bus operator on Taveuni has only enough fuel to keep its buses on the road for another four days.
This raises fears among residents that hundreds of students could be unable to get to school and access to health services could be disrupted.
Taveuni Transport manager Prakash Sami said the fuel shortage caused by the ongoing shipping disruption was reaching a critical stage.
“We only have enough resources for another four days,” he said.
He warned that if fuel and food supplies from the mainland did not arrive soon, the impact would be felt across the island.
“Around 20,000 people will be affected if food supplies from the mainland stop coming into Taveuni.”
Rural and Maritime Development Minister Mosese Bulitavu said the government was fully aware of the situation and the team was assessing the situation on the ground.
Mr Bulitavu said they would activate contingency measures when needed.
