A Suva family is in mourning after their beloved dog, Oscar, was brutally killed in a horrifying act of violence early yesterday morning.
The dog’s owner, Dakshay Kumar, has made a public plea for justice, describing the incident as “heartbreaking and unacceptable.”
“Two men, under the influence of alcohol, stood outside my home swearing at us, throwing stones at the property, and viciously attacking Oscar while he was stuck in the fence,” Mr Kumar said.
“In their drunken state, they went as far as beating him to death.”
He extended his thanks to the Nabua Police for their swift action in apprehending the suspects, but said more must be done to hold the offenders fully accountable.
“I now plead with the authorities and the justice system to ensure that these men face the full brunt of the law.
Animal cruelty of this magnitude must not be tolerated in our society.”
The grieving owner said he is speaking out not only to honour Oscar’s memory, but to urge stronger protections for animals.
“No family should ever have to go through this kind of pain,” he said. “Oscar’s life was cruelly taken, but I will continue to fight for his justice.”
SPCA Fiji said it is calling for justice and stronger action against animal abuse.
“Our deepest sympathies go out to Oscar’s family, who are grieving the loss of a loved and cherished member of their home,” SPCA said in a public statement.
“We are relieved to hear that the individuals responsible for this vicious act have been arrested. We now plead with the Fiji Police Force and all relevant authorities to take this case to the fullest extent of the law,” SPCA said.
“The continued rise in such horrific cases is a clear indication that a stronger stance is urgently needed,” SPCA stated. “The perpetrators of these heinous acts must be held accountable and brought to justice. Only by showing zero tolerance will we deter similar and worse cases from occurring.”
