Chemical weapons

SYRIA shipped out a third consignment of chemical weapons materials on Monday and has also destroyed some materials on its territory, the international mission overseeing the elimination of its chemical arsenal said.

Syria has already slipped more than a month behind schedule for the removal of its chemical weapons, agreed after a chemical weapons attack in Damascus six months ago. Western diplomats said the Syrians would need to make a shipment every two days to get back on schedule.

Vessles collide

TWO maritime vessels collided in the Singapore Strait, in the third such incident in 13 days. On Monday, a Liberia-flagged container ship Hammonia Thracium and a Panama-flagged chemical tanker Zoey collided off Sebarok Island, which is about 10km south of mainland Singapore.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said its Port Operations Control Centre had provided traffic information to the two vessels and alerted the chemical tanker that the container ship was crossing the traffic lane.

Maersk reliable

MAERSK Line remains the most reliable carrier amid ship reliability being at a nine-quarter low across the industry, according to the Carrier Performance Insight published by Drewry for Q4. Maersk Line led the pack with an on-time performance score of 80.1 per cent, an increase of 0.8 percentage points from the third quarter.

Only seven other carriers improved their all-trade reliability, with weaker performances from 19 other major carriers bringing down the Q4 overall score to 63.8 per cent.

Ignored service

LINER shipping is becoming less and less reliable as operators ignore service standards in the rush to cut costs.

The bad news for shippers is that the situation is only going to get worse, according to Drewry’s newly published Carrier Performance Insight report.

Containership reliability worsened in every quarter of 2013, with the fourth-quarter decline taking the on-time average below 64 per cent the lowest it has been for two years.
