THE SportsWorld Fiji under-20 side produced one of its most spirited performances of the World Rugby U20 Championship but fell agonisingly short, losing 24-19 to Ireland in the ninth-place semifinal at the AIA Arena in Kutaisi, Georgia, yesterday.

After enduring a difficult pool campaign, the young Flying Fijians showed significant improvement, matching the Irish physically and testing them with their trademark attacking flair before Ireland held firm in the closing stages.

Ireland carried a slender 14-12 advantage into halftime after an entertaining opening spell in which Fiji repeatedly threatened with powerful carries and expansive ball movement.

Despite being forced to play 20 minutes with 14 men after two players were shown yellow cards, Fiji refused to surrender.

The numerical disadvantage failed to dampen the team’s fighting spirit as the Baby Flying Fijians continued to challenge Ireland across the park, crossing for a crucial second-half try to remain within striking distance.

However, Ireland capitalised on key moments through their structured set-piece play and composure under pressure to preserve their five-point lead until the final whistle.

The result nevertheless highlighted the progress made by the Fijian youngsters since their hard-fought 29-26 victory over Spain to close out the pool stages.

While Fiji’s attacking game again showcased moments of brilliance, execution at crucial line-outs and scrums proved costly as Ireland edged the battle in the tight exchanges.

The Baby Flying Fijians will now turn their attention to the 11th-place playoff, where they will have one final opportunity to finish their World Rugby U20 Championship campaign on a winning note.

Although the scoreboard favoured Ireland, Fiji’s determined display against one of the traditional age-grade powerhouses offered encouraging signs of the team’s growth and resilience heading into their final match of the tournament.
