As tourism slows due to capacity constraints, the Business Process Outsourcing sector is in shape to help economic growth next year.

Reserve Bank Governor Arif Ali said the industry was on track to employ more than 5000 people by the end of this year and on a promising trajectory.

“And with the trend and with the way things are going, we can see that industry becoming a $300m industry hopefully in the next 24 months,” Mr Ali said.

“We’ll need to manage it with a lot of people working there and a lot of them are doing great things, not just answering phones.

“They are now doing insurance, accountancy and there’s a lot of value addition.”

The governor stressed the need to grow the economy as the only way to lessen poverty in Fiji. Agriculture, he said, also still had a lot of potential for growth and much of that was dependent on land and ensuring that resource owners were also part of the growth.

In May, RBF officially revised upwards its growth forecast to eight per cent for this year and 18.6 per cent for 2022, which Mr Ali said were conservative estimates.

Yesterday, members of the media attended an awareness session on inflation at the RBF.
