THE ban on the movement of fresh produce from the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups is reviewed every six months, says Commissioner Western Apolosi Lewaqai.
Authorities are working with the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF), Ministry of Agriculture, Fiji Police Force and maritime operators to enforce the restrictions through inspections, public awareness and monitoring, Mr Lewaqai said.
Yesterday, BAF warned that anyone caught breaching the ban could face a $1000 fine.
The restrictions remain in place to contain the Tongan fruit fly, with the movement of host fruits and vegetables from the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups strictly prohibited.
Meanwhile, the ban has had little impact on fruit and vegetable supplies at the Lautoka market.
Lautoka Market Vendors Association president Filomena O’Neil said most produce sold at the market came from the interior rather than the islands.
